MLA Challenges and Opportunities for Today's Red Meat Producers
The Stock & Land Hamilton Beef Expo has
become an important agricultural field day for the commercial
and stud beef producer, the district fodder and grain producers,
as well as the prime lamb industry.

Beef Expo 2010 incorporates all three
industries, including state of the art technology and innovation.
Held at the Hamilton Showground, Hamilton
Beef Expo includes seminars, trade displays, commercially
based cattle competitions as well as show cattle, prime lambs,
fodder and grain.
CHANGES TO BEEF EXPO IN 2010
In 2010 the old Dining Room at the Showgrounds is to be demolished and a new Conference Centre is to be constructed on that site. This will incorporate the Fashion Pavilion. During Beef Expo 2010 this area will be a work-site and therefore changes have had to be made to Beef Expo layout.
In 2010 the Hamilton Beef Expo committee have decided to consolidate the Interbreed Show Cattle and the Pen of 3 Bulls competition (along with the Pen of 3 Ram Lambs and the Fodder & Grain competition under the one roof. All will be in the Sheep Show Pavilion at the Hamilton Showgrounds. Outdoor trade space will be grouped around this area and car-parking for the general public will be located so that access to the Sheep Pavilion and Food Area will be through the trade sites.
MLA BEEF FORUM
Again the Meat & Livestock Association has agreed to present a forum on the Friday at Beef Expo. This forum will be discussing pertinent issues facing the Beef Industry. More details to follow.
TRADE
There will be extensive trade displays
of cattle equipment, allied services to the industries and
presentation displays of cattle.

For the cattle producer wishing to update cattle handling
facilities and equipment, the Stock & Land Hamilton Beef
Expo has become the Field Days to attend.

BEEF
Highlights of the Stock & Land Hamilton
Beef Expo are the competitions geared to both stud and commercial
producers.ie
• The Interbreed Show Cattle competition.
• The Domestic Carcase competition.
• The Cattle Assessment competition.

• The Pen of 3 Bulls (unled) competition
is based on commercially-driven breed objects. The Pen of
3 Bulls is assessed both visually and objectively. The visual
assessment is based on structure, market suitability and evenness.
This competition is unique to Hamilton Beef
Expo, and allows the spectator to compare and contrast the
bulls, as well as listening to the visual judge's commentary.
The displays of beef cattle of all
breeds make for a highly competitive and visually exciting
competition.
As part of the trade displays, individual
studs as well as breed societies are more than happy to discuss
their particular breed, and many producers have on display
bulls that will feature in their forthcoming sales.
PEN OF 3 RAM LAMBS
Due to the increase in autumn mating, and use of ram lambs in prime lamb breeding programs, the committee introduced a prime lamb terminal sire competition as part of the 2009 Hamilton Beef
Expo.
This competition will be continued at Hamilton Beef Expo 2010, with the aim to present a wider profile of red meat production.
PRIME LAMB SHEARING
With many producers retaining and shearing prime lambs for later sales, Hamilton Beef Expo recognizes the importance shearing quality has in the presentation of these lambs. On Thursday 11th a Prime Lamb Shearing competition is to be held highlighting the importance of quality shearing

FODDER
The highly successful FeedTest Fodder
and Grain Competition will run under the auspices of
Agrifood Technologies in Weribee. Fodder and grain samples have either been sent directly to Werribee or have left at the Showgrounds in Hamilton for later collection.
The aim of the competition is to demonstrate
the importance of objective assessment of fodder and grain
quality, and how it relates to animal production.

Entries are invited in the categories
of lucerne, clover, mixed pasture and cereal hay, as well
as silage and four types of cereal grain (oats, wheat, barley
and triticale).
With the large fluctuations in seasonal
factors during 2009 some interesting results should be evident.
YOUNG AUCTIONEERS
This competition adds to the
evening events with the Young auctioneers “selling”
pens of cattle.

Thursday evening the Hamilton Beef
Expo Food Hall allows all to wind down with a meal, a drink,
music and friends.
EVENT ORGANISERS
The Stock & Land Hamilton Beef Expo is an event run by
the Hamilton Pastoral & Agricultural Society Inc., along
with Hamilton Sheepvention.
